I join a work crew to restore the second most remote lighthouse in the United States. . . Spectacle Reef Lighthouse. Spectacle Reef Light is in northern Lake Huron about 29 miles east of the Mackinac Bridge, Michigan. It has been unmanned for almost 5 decades and it shows. The lighthouse was recently acquired by the Spectacle Reef Historical Society.
Join me and the Spectacle Reef Historical Society as we depart from the port of Cheboygan, Michigan and work to restore decades of neglect. A few of the crew spend the night at the lighthouse and let the boats in the area that there is new life. It is quite an experience and one I won’t soon forget.
We will also talk about the future vision of the lighthouse, its history and educational potential.
